About Me

IMG_4754_edited.jpg

Emma is a music journalist whose words have been featured in local publications Moxie Magazine PGH, Pittsburgh Current, and Steel City Death Club. She also self-publishes on Medium.

She will be studying at the University of Edinburgh for her Master’s in Musicology, starting in Fall 2022.

In addition to writing reviews, conducting interviews, and developing long-form think-pieces, Emma plans to apply her training as a Musicologist to bring an academic, social-scientific voice to music journalism while remaining accessible through clear, concise writing and thorough research. In doing so, she hopes to bring academic thought outside of the university setting and use it to uplift important cultural conversations about the music we consume everyday.

Among her key research interests are investigating legacy, influence, and fandom throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries as well as through contemporary artists. She is also interested in exploring music history and criticism through a wider socio-cultural lens.

She also believes music journalists have a responsibility to their community to hold the industry accountable and to report on the injustices done in business dealings. In this area, she is particularly interested in:

  • examining the record label business model compared to, and in the age of, digital streaming platforms

  • how artists generate revenue in the digital streaming era

  • legal challenges to copyright involving substantial similarity and access in the digital streaming age

  • how the internet and social media have created a need to rethink the entire business structure
