Research

For my undergraduate thesis, I wrote an 25-page qualitative content analysis using archival data to investigate the question "How is fandom gendered in music culture?" Included are a Literature Review, Research Methods, and consideration into three case studies including Beatlemania, the portrayal of groupies in Almost Famous, and fandom in the digital age of Tumblr.

For a Communications Law course, we each chose a case on which to write a legal brief as well as a previous case involving precedent related to our initial case. I chose the copyright case involving Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" and Christian rapper Flame. The precedent in that case involved a suit that was brought on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" by members of the band Spirit.

Written in a Media Ethics course, I examined the governing ethical philosophy that Spotify operates by and how their current business model and practices regarding compensation to artists on the platform contradict their own ethics as listed on their official website. I also gave a video presentation of my conclusion on this project, which can be viewed below.

I wrote this essay examining the influence of literature on music by looking at examples from artists that especially resonate with me including Hozier and Patti Smith. This was for a class in which we read literature from around the world and that was particularly chosen by the instructor for the stories' placement on the periphery of mainstream literature that is taught in public education curriculum.
